Good morning Carolyn
I just wanted to say thank you for Friday. We enjoyed our visit to your golf club very much indeed. Breakfast was fantastic and your golf course was a delight to play. The whole experience was a joy and a great start to our golfing weekend. A big thank you to all your staff for making our visit so pleasant. The weather could not have been better for either.

Good Morning Carolyn,
My son and I would like to thank you and all the staff for our excellent day. A great coursewhere every hole was fun and challenging, with absolutely stunning views of the town and surrounding countryside. Ahuge thank you to the green staff for their hard effort. It totally shows in the condition of the course. We look forward to coming back next year.

Enjoyed the course today, and the greens were really good. All the fairways are very green compared to other courses we have played around the Newcastle and Durham area. We enjoy playing golf at Hawick, and very much look forward to playing it again next year.

The course is great. Really enjoyed spending time out there. So many beautiful views, and what a day to play in full sunshine.

Historical Hawick is the oldest course in the Borders. It started with 11 holes and had 12 by the time prolific course architect James Braid redesigned the course adding six holes to produce today’s configuration.
The 5 times Open Champion had many talents, one of them was routing lovely courses over unpromising terrain. Like many in the Borders, the course tends to sit high above the town clinging to steep slopes. This meant the golf was often as breathless as the views. I found my interest and enjoyment of the Hawick rose exponentially as the course sidewinded up, across and ultimately back down Vertish Hill.
After 7 holes I was joined by friendly local member Derek Nicholson and his dog Fudge, who walked with me until the 14th giving handy pointers as we went.
It should be noted that is not a drive and wedge course. There are several long par fours requiring two good strikes – it’s a proper test of golf.
The outstanding holes were on the back 9 and the stretch from 12 – 18 is particularly exciting. 13 at the top of the course, is an invitingly attractive but challenging par 3 well guarded by bunkers, but 16 is the pick of the bunch. The late, great, rugby commentator, Bill McLaren famously hailed from Hawick. He had a hole in one at this downhill par 4 (262 yards), hence the hole is now called ‘McLaren’s Miracle’. As fate would have it, as I played the nearby 5th, another golfer also aced the 16th for an albatross – amazing! I made do with a two putt birdie.
The course ends as it starts with a par 3 to the same double green, the 18th tumbling back downhill to where I began a couple of hours before.
Yes, Hawick is a hike at times, but the views and the course (especially the back nine) are well worth the effort and as part of the James Braid Association the £25 green fee is good value.
